Callaway ECLIPSE Review: Well Featured, Extremely Portable

Callaway ECLIPSE follows a very interesting concept. Let’s be honest; most if not all of us want accurate readings and reliable features packed into the most portable unit that is easy and practical to use. In this Callaway ECLIPSE review, we will see the things that the device gets right and where it falls short.

Below, you can find out more about:

  • The size and weight of Callaway ECLIPSE
  • The design and portability of the unit
  • The display quality of the unit
  • The built-in features and capabilities of Callaway ECLIPSE
  • The performance and accuracy of the unit
  • How long that the battery lasts per charge
  • Whether you should or shouldn’t buy Callaway ECLIPSE

Size and Weight
The very first distinctive quality that sets Callaway ECLIPSE apart from the competition is the incredibly compact form factor. If you think that your friend’s handheld GPS rangefinder is very compact, think again, because Callaway ECLIPSE is much smaller and lighter than most other models in the market.

Those ultra-compact models either lack a display screen or have very basic features. With Callaway ECLIPSE, you get a fully functional display screen and some incredible features.

This unit measures 4.25 inches long, 3 inches wide. Well, it is not exactly a watch-sized device, especially because its thickness is 1.75 inches. And, yes, there are still smaller models out there – such as the one we discussed in Voice Caddie VC 200 Review some time ago. However, don’t forget that those ultra-compact models either lack a display screen or have very basic features. With Callaway ECLIPSE, you get a fully functional display screen and some incredible features.

It has a weight of about 1.6 oz. It is very lightweight. Laser and GPS rangefinders often weigh several ounces heavier. Those models may make your bag heavy and tire your hands, as you need to switch between the rangefinder and the golf clubs. Meanwhile, Callaway ECLIPSE is so compact and lightweight that it won’t add any significant burden to your hands.

Design
Callaway ECLIPSE is actually manufactured and supported by Izzo, which is also a well-known company that produces golf equipment products. It is true that Callaway and Izzohas formed a collaboration, and there have been several products resulted from them working together. Callaway ECLIPSE is a fine example of how Callaway’s modern technology combines with Izzo’s innovation and creativity.

Callaway ECLIPSE is available in two color choices, which are black and white. The black version has a casing that is almost entirely black, except for the gray buttons on the sides. Meanwhile, the white version is actually more of silver-gray, with a white front frame that surrounds the display and white side buttons.

The device looks plain and simple. The casing is made from hard plastic. But it is 1-ATM waterproof and comes with an integrated clip.

The device looks pretty plain and simple. The casing is made from hard plastic, so it doesn’t look premium or anything like that. Mostly, this is not a problem, because the ultra-compact unit won’t pull much attention. You don’t need to worry if you think that the effectiveness and functionality of the unit are more important than the look.

By the way, the device is 1-ATM waterproof. So, it can withstand temporary exposure to rain or water splashes. This is a nice plus point.

One great thing about Callaway ECLIPSE is that it comes with an integrated clip. The clip is placed neatly on the top of the device. Thanks to this, you can easily clip it to your belt loop or bag. The clip is well-built and sturdy, so the device will not get dropped accidentally. Of course, if you don’t want to clip it, you can just pocket it.

Unfortunately, Callaway ECLIPSE is not a completely perfect product. There is one weakness in terms of design and control. The buttons are a little bit too hard to press. As the effect, pressing a button takes more effort than just a gentle bump. This becomes tricky because of the small size of the unit. When you are wearing gloves, you will find it very challenging to press the buttons without having the unit slipping around.

Display
Callaway ECLIPSE is fitted with a small display screen. It is a 1.28-inch monochrome display screen, so it shows everything in black and white. However, it is obviously more advanced than your calculator’s screen, as it is able to display images and icons with good sharpness and show more than just one kind of information in the same screen. Plus, the backlight is powerful enough to make the screen easily readable under direct sunlight.

According to the specifications, the display of the unit has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. Although the resolution doesn’t show high, don’t forget that the 1.28-inch display size is quite small in the first place. As the effect, the display can have a fairly good pixel density. Text, images, and icons are displayed with excellent crispness, so it is such a joy to read.

Callaway ECLIPSE has a 1.28-inch monochrome display screen with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. The pixel density is good, so the screen is quite crisp and detailed.

Callaway ECLIPSE is able to show the distances to the center, front, and back of the green all at the same time. The current hole and par are shown on the top left corner, whereas the distance to the center of the green is on the top right. Then, the middle part of the screen shows an image of the green, with distances to the front and back right next to it.

Finally, the remaining battery power inside the unit is indicated by an icon on the bottom left corner. It consists of four bars. Each bar represents about 25-percent of the total battery capacity. So, each time the icon loses a bar, that means the battery has lost a 25-percent portion of the capacity. The clock is shown on the bottom right.

Course Map
Just like many other models from Callaway, this device comes with more than 30,000 golf course maps from all around the world. So, it is practically usable in any country.

The unit has built-in GPS, so it can automatically detect the golf course you are currently in and recognize the hole. In other words, it allows you to play right away without having to fumble with any setting or menu screen. You can also select the course map manually by using the Up and Down buttons.

This device comes with more than 30,000 golf course maps from all around the world. You can download the course maps for free.

Perhaps the more important thing is to know how to update the course maps, because using an outdated map is just as disastrous as not using any map at all. Callaway ECLIPSE can only be updated through a Windows computer; which means, if you don’t have a Windows computer, you will need to borrow someone else’s PC to update the course maps.

You can head to the company’s official website to download the update tool for the device. After installing the software, you can connect the rangefinder unit to the PC with a USB cable. Afterwards, just follow the instructions from the tool. The download process may take a while, but the process is simple and easy to understand.

And, just like many other Callaway products, the company won’t charge you anything for the course map updates. You can download the course maps for free. Callaway ECLIPSE is completely functional without requiring any subscription fee or annual fee.

It is true that some of Callaway’s competitors, such as Garmin, offer data aggregation and online community platforms. Callaway doesn’t have any feature like that. Even so, the free map updates already bring such a very interesting value for the money.

Features
Callaway ECLIPSE shows the distances to the center, front, and back of the green in the Green View. The distances are generally accurate. They may be off by 1 or 2 yards at the worst, but it is accurate most of the time.

The display doesn’t show whether the numbers are in yards or meters. Instead, in the device’s setting, you can choose between yardage and meter for the measurement unit. This is a bit inconvenient because you need to head to the setting screen when you forget whether the device is set to yards or meters.

Nevertheless, the device takes a few moments to fully sync its location with the satellite. So, make sure that you wait for the device to stop updating its location before choosing your club and hitting the ball. This is to ensure that you get an accurate reading, so that you can make the right decision when choosing your club and determining how to hit the ball.

Callaway ECLIPSE shows the distances to the center, front, and back of the green in the Green View. The distances are generally accurate. It can also give you carry and layup distances to doglegs and hazards.

It can also give you carry and layup distances to doglegs and hazards.By pressing the OK button, you can head to the Hazard View, which lists up to three hazards and their distances on the screen. You can scroll up and down to see the other hazards in the course. So, you are prepared to face any challenge that you may encounter on the field.

Callaway ECLIPSE comes with built-in Shot Distance Measurement. This feature is accessed by pressing the Down button. After hitting the ball, you can activate the feature and start walking towards the ball. The device will measure the distance travelled from the starting point. In addition, you may also activate the odometer before starting your game to measure the total distance travelled throughout.

Other notable features include the built-in scorecard which allows you to track scores, putts, GIR, and pars, an alarm, and the adjustable backlight timeout. You should adjust the backlight timeout, as different people have different preferences for this. Some people prefer the screen to stay turned on for a long time, while some others prefer the backlight to timeout quickly to save some battery life. The device supports four languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Deutsch.

Battery Life
Callaway ECLIPSE is equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery life is excellent. According to the specifications, the battery can last for 9 hours from a single charge. However, by adjusting the backlight timeout, it is possible for you to get one or two more hours from the battery. Some users say that the device can last for 10 – 12 hours, and is sufficient for 2 – 3 rounds of golf.

The recharging process is pretty good, although it does not come with the fast charging technology yet. It usually takes about two or three hours to recharge. That’s pretty much a common duration for most handheld electronic devices.

You recharge the unit by using the included charger. Aligning the charging pins to the charging ports on the bottom of the device may be a bit tricky. The easiest way to align them is by looking at the back of the device. Next, you need to place the charger clamp to the charger socket, and plug the USB cord. The device is fully recharged when the battery icon has stopped pulsating.
